Sunday was such a perfect day to see ‘Hotel California’ Ian Berry’s fourth solo exhibition.

The sun shone on the private view in Hampstead’s prestigious Catto Gallery, we spilt out onto the street looking into the gallery of the many layers, hues & textures of blue denim Ian uses to create his intricate masterpieces.

As per usual Ian Berry does not disappoint and I was excited to see the flora & fauna from a previous installation ‘Secret Garden’ from New York 2017, I hadn’t seen before.

Also an installation of Soho Records 2018, which I did get to see. This really delighted Eloise my daughter (below) as she a budding guitarist with a love for Pink Floyd.

Hotel California

While travelling in California, Ian had the Eagles song ‘Hotel California’ going around his head. He re-created the album cover from the Eagles 1977 hit, that pictures the Beverly Hills Hotel made out of denim. Pools at the Roosevelt Hotel, Mondrian and Standard in Los Angeles all take on a deeper meaning when every shadow, shading and ripple is created in denim.

Slide your way through the exhibition images that coincide with the ‘Eagles’ song ‘Hotel California’. Listen to the song here!

Watch my guided tour below of the exhibition Hotel California as you’ll see the close-up details and my excitement of how much detailing Ian puts into his work.

In London till the 28th of July?, I urge you to pop into the Catto Gallery and see why the Londonist gives Hotel California the No1 spot for the best London exhibition in July!

If you love the idea of being apart of one of Ian Berry’s paintings you can donate your old jeans here to be upcycled in his next project.
