Clean Jeans Vs Colour Fading

Daily wear and tear can cause black denim to fade if you wash your jeans every few days. If you want your black jeans to stay as dark as the day you bought them, then read on as Levis & Madewell give their hacks on how to keep black denim forever black.

Levis Says

#1: Machine washing your jeans is the quickest way to fade them. Instead of running for the washer-dryer, try spot-treating the stains instead. Put them in the freezer to kill any bacteria and lingering odours.

#2:If the freezer isn’t for you and you do toss those black jeans in the machine, be sure to turn them inside out, use cold water and get a detergent that’s specially formulated for dark fabrics. When they’re done, hang dry.

#3:Did you know that vinegar is known for locking in color? For an extra color-safe cleaning, soak your black jeans in cold water and a half cup of white vinegar for 30 minutes and then line dry. An added benefit: soaking and handwashing is gentler on fabric, and maintains the quality of black denim.

Set the dye before their first wash. “Soak your jeans—inside out—in a bath of cold water with one cup of white vinegar and one tablespoon of salt. This helps set the dye into your denim before a disruptive wash.

Be gentle. “The less often your jeans touch soap or water, the longer the color will last, so try not to wash ’em often and spot clean smaller stains. If you must wash, though, do it on a low setting or by hand. (Mama Earth will thank you for that one, too.) Your last, very important to-do: Turn them inside out before they soak.

Do not put them in the dryer. “Air drying prevents fiber breakdown, making it the best way to prolong the richness of the color. Dry your denim right side out and hanging by the back belt loop (see picture above). The weight of the denim will help prevent wrinkles.

There you have it, some great ideas on how to keep your jeans clean & black. Preventative is better than cure so be sure to treat your new blacks before that first wash.
