TRIED & TESTED: The Drama High Waist Flare by Mother.

TRIED & TESTED DENIM REVIEW

Today I’m reviewing the Drama High Waist Flare in Joyride by MOTHER.

This style was sent to be Tried & Tested by The Dressing Room.

MOTHER launched in 2010, ilovejeans reported about the brand back in February, click here to read. So I’m very interested to try the brand as the style is often featured in magazines as the IT jean.

Firstly the feel of the denim is soft with a peach skin touch. I always check the fabric content to get an idea of how the style will perform, (a bit like looking under the bonnet of a car) 33% Cotton, 65% Tencel, 2% Elastane. With 65% of the jean made from Tencel I decide to investigate!

“Tencel is a a biodegradable fabric made from wood pulp cellulose. It started to grow in popularity in the late 1990s. Tencel is known to have a peach skin or silk touch. The manufacturer of Tencel® claims the fabric to be environmentally friendly and a good choice for people with sensitive skin.”

As a denim expert I’m a bit obsessed with the measurement of the rise, as this is the key point when trying on jeans for your body shape. The Drama has a high rise of 9.5 inches and a back rise of 13.5 inches which offers good coverage and comfort.

FIT TIP: A quick way to check if this rise is good for your shape is by measuring with a tape measure, starting at your crotch to your belly button.  If  the measurement of your natural rise is 9.5 inches or over this style is good for you! (If under, a mid-rise would be more suitable)

The faux welt front pockets gives a smooth line over the tummy area, so no pocket bulge. They are placed on the side of the hip area which gives the illusion of narrow hips.

This style has a slim fit over the thighs which kicks out into a flare just past the knee, very 70′s ‘fit n flare’!

The leg length is 34 inches so definately a jean to wear with heels, giving the illusion of legs that go on for miles.

The leg opening measures 22 inches .This is the measurement that will tell you how wide the opening of the leg of your new jeans will be. If you need to have these jeans made shorter take note that you will lose an inch or so off the flare, so be sure to wear them with your highest heels when pinning the length.

The back pockets in my opinion are quite unusual, as they are square, visually the shape of the pocket works with the simple minimal styling of The Drama jean, elongating the body as well as the leg.

However I have a fairly flat bottom (apple body shape) so the square pockets elongate my bottom rather than making it pert. When trying jeans for my apple body shape it’s important the jean will flatter and lift my derriere! Having said that The Drama pockets are set low down on the bottom which will give a fuller curvier bottom a bit of a lift.

A question of size: The Drama comes in US sizing 25 to 32. The size I’m trying is a 27 which is equivalent to a UK 9 ( if they made them) and I could go down to a 26 as there is a 2% stretch.

The Dressing Room says: As a rule sizing runs from 25-32 with a standard size 10 fitting into a 28 waist, therefore a size 29 waist would be equivalent to a size 11, 30 waist a size 12 and so on. This is pretty spot on when it comes to US sizing.

So to round up The Drama High Waist Flare:

It’s a good looking 70′s flare re-worked with a minimal styling using today’s fabric technology, designed to give a slim, tall silhouette.
The feel of the jean is a soft luxurious denim with a mid stretch and is very comfortable to wear.
A great style for Long & leggy, Hourglass and Pear body shapes as the high waist and flare is a winning combination when dressing a curvacious body.
Not such a great style for Apple and Petite body shapes due to the leg length, high rise and back pocket detail. (sorry girls).

The Price: I’ve left the price till last so it didn’t cloud our judgement.  The price is £235, which pitches MOTHER as a high end premium denim brand.
In my book it is an expensive purchase BUT if this style ticks all the boxes for you when it comes to fit and you feel fantastic in them then go for it!

The Drama High Waist scores 4/5 for quality & fit

House of Fraser celebrates its second collection for iconic fashion label Biba

Biba at House of Fraser reveals its spring summer 2011 collection.  The new campaign, shot by photographer Ellen Von Unwerth, features model Daisy Lowe, who appeared in the launch campaign, wearing some of Biba’s hottest new looks.

Embracing Biba’s heritage and reflecting fashion’s current love affair with the 1970s, the spring summer collection features beautiful prints on long sleeved dresses and blouses, high-waisted, flared jeans, printed jumpsuits, maxi dresses and skirts, and slouchy metallic knits.

The boho spirit lives on in ‘Moody Blues’, with soft watercolour prints layered over deep indigo denim. A luxurious, soft leather trench coat gives an edge to an otherwise feminine story, while the abstract print silk jumpsuit encapsulates the essence of the 1970s-inspired trend…. Biba Denim

Putting the fashion back into denim, Biba brings you a fabulous jeans collection to make sure even your basic blues are right on trend. For stylishly dressed pins, invest in one – or all – of Biba’s key shapes.

For spring it’s all about the high-waisted indigo flare; come summer, the white skinny jean is this season’s must-have.

‘Sacre Coeur’, one of the first stories of the season, is daytime glamour at its best.  Heavily influenced by 1940s tailored silhouettes, pieces are updated with strong colour combinations on conversational and floral prints. Tea dresses, sheer ladylike peplum blouses and high-waisted pencil skirts are all integral to the look.

With a faded, romantic quality ‘Monet’ is influenced by 1967’s ‘summer of love’.  Blurred floral prints and soft, dusted pastels are seen on sheer fabrics, while skirt lengths are long and full, with ruffles and tiers as a must. The floral tiered maxi skirt is a hero piece and is a perfect, easy-to-wear summer staple.

‘Arabian Nights’ is Biba’s interpretation of safari style. Crochet dresses are fluid in shape and metallic linen shorts ooze understated glamour. Desert shades highlighted by burnished metal finishes in gold and bronze help create a look that is sophisticated and luxurious.

‘Silk Trail’ is a high summer story that journeys from Casablanca to Marakesh.  Shades of sand are accented by soft coral and mint, with subtle embellishment complementing the pared-down, prairie-influenced trend. Silhouettes have a chic drape effect with fluidity and volume, while prints are paisley-esque. The printed trouser and draped waistcoat are key to the look. Brash and sexy, ‘Hyper Real’ channels the peasant glamour of 1970s YSL. Digital prints are discordant, with a strong saturated colour explosion mixed with brilliant white. A statement white jumpsuit takes centre stage and should be worn with confidence. Gathers and ruffles soften this powerful trend, creating the finishing touches to Biba’s spring summer collection.
